Bearing

Bearings are a way of describing an angle. It is a direction. The direction defines if the place lie in North, South, East, or West of our current location. They are commonly used in navigation. There are three rules which must be followed when using a bearing:

1. They are measured from North. North is usually straight up on a scale drawing or map, and should be labelled on the diagram
2. They are measured clockwise
3. The angle should always be written with 3 digits 059° instead ofjust 59°

The actual distance is \(5 \times 500 = 2500\) m, i.e., \(2.5\) km.
18. In the map of Kathmandu valley, the distance between Ram's house and Hari's house is \(12 \, \text{cm}\). If the map is prepared by taking the scale of \(1 \, \text{cm} = 400 \, \text{m}\), find the actual distance between their houses.[2U]
The actual distance is \(12 \times 400 = 4800\) m, i.e., \(4.8\) km.
19. In a map, which was prepared by taking the scale of \(1:2000 \, \text{m}\), the distance between two places A and B is \(7 \, \text{cm}\), find the actual distance between the two places.[2U]
The scale \(1:2000\) means 1 cm on map = 2000 cm in reality.
But since the answer is expected in metres, note that \(2000 \, \text{cm} = 20 \, \text{m}\).
So actual distance = \(7 \times 20 = 140\) m.

20. If the bearing of place B from place A is \(075^\circ\), find the bearing of A from B.[2U]
The bearing of A from B is the back bearing of \(075^\circ\).
Back bearing = \(075^\circ + 180^\circ = 255^\circ\).
Hence, the bearing of A from B is \(255^\circ\).
